My story
Discovering a New Path: From Nursing to Acupuncture
After dedicating over 20 years to nursing, I reached a point in my career where I felt stagnant. The daily routine, while fulfilling in many ways, began to feel repetitive, and I longed for professional growth and a new challenge. At the same time, I found myself in the midst of a midlife crisis, questioning the direction of my life and seeking deeper meaning.
During this period of introspection, I turned to Taoism for answers. As I delved into the learnings and practices of Taoism, I discovered its profound connection to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This revelation sparked a newfound passion within me. I decided to immerse myself in learning about the rich and beautiful culture of Chinese medicine.
As I began my acupuncture clinical practice, I was captivated by the power and depth of Chinese Medicine. TCM offers a unique perspective on diseases, focusing on addressing the root causes rather than merely alleviating symptoms. For instance, in TCM, conditions like insomnia and depression are understood through various pathological patterns, and treatments are tailored to these patterns. This individualized approach considers lifestyle factors and physical attributes, enhancing the overall treatment outcomes.
One of the most enlightening aspects of my training was learning how to integrate TCM with my background in Western Medicine. For example, when treating hyperemesis gravidarum (severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy), I don't just rely on traditional acupuncture points. I also apply my knowledge of anatomy to significantly relieve symptoms by regulating the autonomic nervous system, especially when it has been compromised by past injuries.
The holistic nature of TCM, combined with my understanding of Western Medicine, has made acupuncture a powerful tool in my practice. I truly enjoy analyzing diseases from this dual perspective, which allows for more comprehensive and effective treatments. At Beyond Acupuncture, I am committed to helping you achieve optimal well-being through personalized and holistic treatments.
It is my greatest privilege to care for your health using this integrative approach. I sincerely invite you to join me on this exciting new journey.
Warm Regards,
Iris Zhang
